Selling this U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1842 Percussion Musket, made in 1850.
This was the first regulation model of a Musket made in percussion ignition at the national armories. The Model 1842 was also the last U.S. arm made in 69 smooth bore caliber and was the first weapon made at both Springfield and Harpers Ferry Armories with fully interchangeable parts. Approximately 103,000 Model 1842 Muskets were made by Harpers Ferry from 1844 to 1855. The lock plate is marked "HARPERS / FERRY / 1850" behind the hammer and the eagle shield motif over "U S" in front of the hammer. Any barrel markings are obscured by heavy pitting.
This is a gun that could have seen action in the conflicts proceding the civil war, and potentially in it as well, as many confederate forces did not get rifles until the later parts of the war, and used "buck and ball" for much of the beginning.
The gun has some heavy pitting, but seems to be in good working condition. This is a 170+ year old item, and looks the part.
